About Us

We are a research intensive Department, with outstanding training opportunities for motivated undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Our faculty members conduct research in diverse life science areas, and our main strengths include Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics, Cell & Developmental Biology, Ecology & Evolution, Environmental Physiology, Genetics & Molecular Biology, and Microbiology & Plant Biology.

Our undergraduate programs provide a rich experience in a many areas of Biology, and our students leave well prepared for challenging careers in health care and related fields, post-secondary teaching, and further research training as graduate students in Canada and abroad, amongst many others. Our award-winning faculty and staff are committed to bringing you a high-quality experience, irrespective of whether you are in our core Biology program, one of our Biology specializations, our joint-departmental programs or our co-op degree programs.

For those interested in advanced research training at the graduate (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) or postdoctoral level, our internationally-renowned faculty research programs are funded by large grants from a variety of federal agencies (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council; Canadian Institutes of Health Research; Canada Foundation for Innovation), as well as provincial agencies, and different charitable organizations (e.g. Heart and Stroke Foundation). Our research facilities include well-equipped general laboratories, together with facilities for more specialized work, including animal facilities, greenhouses and plant growth chambers, and a microscopy suite. In addition to our own equipment, we have access to all major facilities throughout the University including the Farncombe Metagenomics Facility, Centre for Microbial Chemical Biology, Biointerfaces Institute, Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy, FHS Electron Microscopy Facility, and the John Mayberry Histology Facility, collectively providing a state-of-the-art research experience.

People and facilities alone do not guarantee a rich and satisfying experience. To further achieve this, we run an active seminar programme which brings distinguished outside speakers from various fields of biology. This program is supplemented by specialized seminars, and journal/clubs that jointly aim to foster a vibrant intellectual environment.
