Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the Biology Department at McMaster and to our website. As you explore Biology at McMaster, I hope you will discover some of what distinguishes us from other institutions. McMaster is the smallest Canadian University ranked in the top 100 in the world by the Times Educational Supplement- and this is reflected in Biology. We are a relatively small department – and hence our experts across the broad disciplines of Biology interact and collaborate extensively, both in our research and in our teaching.

Our undergraduate programs are designed to maximize the opportunity for hands-on skills development. Our aim is not only to train the next generation of scientists – it is equally important to us to graduate scientifically literate citizens with excellent critical thinking and communication skills, alongside strong lab skills who are prepared for careers in government, health care, bio-technology, post-secondary teaching, or further research training as graduate students. We have outstanding undergraduate specializations in Physiology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Bio-Pharmacology – all of which will provide you with diverse skills and lab experiences. Our award-winning faculty and staff are committed to bringing you a quality experience, regardless of whether you are in our Biology program, one of our Biology specializations, or our co-op programs.

Biology is a research-intensive Department, with outstanding in-lab training opportunities for motivated undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Our main strengths include Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics, Cell & Developmental Biology, Ecology & Evolution, Environmental Physiology, Genetics & Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Plant Biology.

For those interested in advanced research training at the graduate (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) or postdoctoral level, the Department hosts a large student cohort and very diverse research interests under one roof. Our well-equipped laboratories, together with facilities for more specialized work, such as aquatic animal, molecular biology, cell culture, microscopy, and greenhouse facilities, together with plant growth chambers and a microscopy suite, ensures a state-of-the-art research experience.
